LE SCANDALE DE "VIRGIN KILLER"
Si le groupe de hard-rock Scorpions s'est rapidement imposé comme incontournable dans le milieu musical, les musiciens allemands se sont aussi fait remarquer avec leur album Virgin Killer, tant du point de vue musical que commercial. Sortie en 1976, la pochette de cet album provoqua un tollé général avec cette petite fille entièrement nue, ostensiblement tournée vers le "spectateur" et dont le sexe est opportunément "caché" par l'impact du verre de l'objectif de l'appareil (nous le supposons ainsi...).
Le scandale est tel que la pochette est censurée. Excepté en France, la photo est remplacée par une autre, plus classique, du groupe. Mais cette affaire dure encore puisqu'en décembre 2008, l'IWF (Internet Watch Foundation) juge encore la photo indécente et à caractère pédopornographique. Certains fournisseurs d'accès à internet britanniques censurent même la photo de l'album sur le lien de Wikipédia, la fameuse encyclopédie libre électronique. La société Wikipédia va porter l'affaire devant les tribunaux en déclarant que seule la photo était incriminée et non l'article en lui-même. Enfin, les administrateurs de Wikipédia s'interrogent sur l'action en elle-même de l'IWF qui intervient fin 2008 alors que la pochette date de 1976 et que l'IWF a été créée elle-même en 1996... Wikipédia obtient gain de cause et l'IWF lève l'interdit sur le filtrage du site.
Au-delà du "scandale" iconographique, la vraie question reste le message que le groupe Scorpions a voulu véhiculer par la biais de cette photo controversée. A priori, le groupe a voulu imager le "temps", tueur d'innocence. C'est ce que déclare Rudolf Schenker, le guitariste du groupe, lors d'une interview donnée en 2007 pour le site Blasting-zone.com(1) :
The lyrics really say it all. Time is the virgin killer. A kid comes into the world very naive, they lose that naiveness and then go into this life losing all of this getting into trouble. That was the basic idea about all of it.
Provocation intentionnelle ? Maladresse de communication ? Métaphore incomprise ? Peut être un peu tout cela à la fois...
Rudolf Schenker se veut plus précis, notamment quand il déclare que l'idée de la jeune fille nue sur la pochette était l'idée de la compagnie de disque RCA et d'un journaliste :
"I pushed the band to really stay behind it because it wasn't the idea of ours it was the idea of the record company and a journalist; who was a very good friend of ours. So, I told them it was the best way to push the press people into a position of having to really think about it. Because we found out that the people that were writing about the Scorpions in those days never went through the lyrics or whatever. [...] 'Virgin Killer' was a great title and that we have to use it! So, we used it and out of the lyrics came the line that time was a virgin killer. That means everybody comes in through life with a very naive, and a very great feeling to do something and time is killing your naivety, killing your emotions because you really have too many blocks to whatever you want to do. [...] So, in this case when they came up with the cover - the record company and the guy - I said that it was a great thing. Because many people were not going through the lyrics they were only making some stupid kind of comments. But when you said to them have they looked at the lyrics as we're only using it as a symbol of the lyrics they started to think differently. So, hopefully then they go through it differently and then we get through the whole situation." (2)
De son côté, le legendaire guitariste du groupe, Uli John Roth, reconnaît qu'aujourd'hui le choix de la photo de l'époque "l'embarasse" sincèrement :
Looking at that picture today makes me cringe. It was done in the worst possible taste. Back then I was too immature to see that. Shame on me — I should have done everything in my power to stop it. The record company came up with the idea, I think. The lyrics incidentally were a take-off on KISS, whom we had just supported on a tour. I was fooling around and played the riff of the song in the rehearsal room and spontaneously improvised ''cause he's a virgin killer!' trying to do a more or less way-off-the-mark Paul Stanley impersonation. Klaus immediately said 'that's great! You should do something with it.' Then I had the unenviable task of constructing a meaningful set of lyrics around the title, which I actually managed to do to some degree. But the song has a totally different meaning from what people would assume at first. Virgin Killer is none other than the demon of our time, the less compassionate side of the societies we live in today — brutally trampling upon the heart and soul of innocence. (3)
L'album va connaître un bon succès, indépendamment de sa couverture de pochette, devenant même disque d'or au Japon en quelques semaines.
